Leather cartridge box with 24-hole wooden block insert and original linen strap. Box approx. 9 1/2 x 5 3/4 x 3 1/4 in., hole bore approx. 23/32 in.
A rare, surviving artifact of a Revolutionary War or War of 1812 soldier’s accoutrement kit, exemplifying the improvised craftsmanship needed during America’s struggle for independence.
As most extant early cartridge boxes incorporate a straight-edged wooden block, the ergonomically curved block is an unusual and noteworthy feature of this example. The lack of widespread standardization for these accouterments resulted in subtle variations of this nature. Each of the 24 holes would have held a paper-wrapped musket cartridge, with the box itself protecting them from the elements.
