1768 warrant British silvered tin grenadier's cap plate with black enamel detailing. N.p., n.d. Approx. 10 3/4 x 4 3/4 x 1 3/4 in.
Per the royal warrant of 1768, "The caps of the grenadiers [are] to be of black bear-skin. On the front, the King's crest, of silver plated metal, on a black ground, with the motto, Nee aspera terrent." This example conforms to these plate criteria precisely. The notion of a British bearskin grenadier hat emerged in the wake of the French and Indian War, as the British took a liking to those worn by their counterparts from France and Austria.
A fine example.

Overall a fine example; the enamel exhibits some wear and there is rust to the verso.
