Manuscript document Ebenezer Stevens as Lieut. Colonel. N.p., 10 June 1783. 1 page, 8 x 4 1/2 in.
Ebenezer Stevens (1751-1823) was a member of the Sons of Liberty and Paddock's Artillery Company, alongside Paul Revere. With his comrades, he participated in the Boston Tea Party, one of the inciting events of the American Revolution.
Upon the outbreak of war at the Battle of Lexington, Stevens volunteered for the Continental Army, was commissioned a First Lieutenant in the Company of Rhode Island Artillery, and fought at the Battle of Bunker Hill. He was promoted to Major in the Independent Battalion of Artillery on 9 November 1776. He raised battalions against Quebec at the request of General George Washington, was present at the surrender of General Burgoyne at Saratoga in 1777, served under the Marquis de Lafayette with distinction, was promoted again to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in Lamb's Continental Artillery Regiment, and was in command at Yorktown.
This document dates from the end of his military service, shortly before his discharge from the army. The document is a receipt from Thomas Pickering (1745-1829) as Quartermaster General, paying David Wolf for "forage rations due me from the first of February last to the 30th June".
An excellent Revolutionary War pay document.
