Account of Cloath'g delivered to...the 9th Massa. Regiment Commanded by James Wesson Esq. for the Year 1780. N.p., [1780?]. 2 pages, folio. 8 1/8 x 13 1/4 in.
Colonel James Wesson (1734-1809) enlisted on 18 May 1775 as Major of Col. Loammi Baldwin's regiment, the 38th Massachusetts, and in 1777 transferred to the 8th Massachusetts. He fought courageously at the Battle of Oriskany on 6 August 1777 and was promoted 9 days later to Colonel of the 8th Massachusetts. He would also fight with distinction at the Battles of Saratoga and Monmouth Court House. Sometime in 1779, he transferred to the 9th Massachusetts Regiment, a consolidation of the 21st and 26th Continental Regiments. They served in the Northern Department, participating at Fort Stanwix, Saratoga, and Valley Forge.
The document notes the uniform pieces distributed to two companies in the 9th Massachusetts - companies commanded by Captain N. Dix and Major Pettengill. Notably, Major Joseph Pettengill (1753-1833) was a founding member of, and present at the 1783 convention for establishing, the Society of the Cincinnati.
