FROM THE LIBRARY OF PRESIDENT MILLARD FILLMORE: VOLUME BOLDLY SIGNED BY THE PRESIDENT AND FIRST LADY ABIGAIL FILLMORE

The Percy Anecdotes. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1838. Vol. I only (of 2), 8vo. Engraved frontispiece and title. Contemporary calf. Revised Edition.

Provenance: President Millard Fillmore; Barton Atkins (provenance note affixed to front free endpaper).

BOLDLY SIGNED BY MILLARD FILLMORE to interior front board. ADDITIONALLY SIGNED BY ABIGAIL POWERS FILLMORE to front free endpaper.

A note inscribed by Barton Atkins and dated 1892 is affixed to the front free endpaper and reads in full: "This book I purchased at the sale of the Ex President's Library, Buffalo 1890. The signature on the opposite pages is now well known by hundreds living in Buffalo to be in the hand writing of Mr. Fillmore. Barton Atkins. 1892." An additional hand writes below, " The signature on this page is that of Mrs. Fillmore the first."

The Buffalo Courier Express announced on 30 December 1890 that "Millard Fillmore's Books and Those of His Son Bieng Sold at Auction," continuing with great excitement, "It isn't often that Buffalo has an auction sale of old books and it will be a good while before the library of a President is put under the hammer, here or anywhere else." The article reports on the auction at great length, noting that the library "contained about 3,000 volumes, a great part of which were law books."

[Books, Bibles, Soldiers' Bibles, Prayer Books, Ephemera, Pamphlets, Publications, Booklets, Memoirs] [Politics, Presidents, Vice-Presidents, First Ladies]
