A rare bookplate featuring a satirical portrait of Kentucky politician Henry Clay from "The Comic Natural History of the Human Race". The bookplate featured politicians and contemporary figures of note depicted as phantasmagorical creatures. 

Henry Clay (1777-1852) was a prominent American statesman known for his influential role in 19th-century politics. He served as a lawyer, congressman, senator, and diplomat, leaving an indelible mark on the United States. As the "Great Compromiser," Clay skillfully navigated conflicts and promoted national unity. Advocating for the American System, he championed internal improvements and protective tariffs. Clay's significant contributions include the Missouri Compromise of 1820, which aimed to balance the interests of slave and free states. Despite unsuccessful presidential bids, his statesmanship and commitment to preserving the Union solidified his position as one of America's most respected political figures.

Clay was often referred to as Ol' Coon during his political career, a reference to his Kentucky home and meant to highlight his rustic heritage. The sobriquet was used during his 1844 presidential campaign and lampooned here.
