Bone and ebonized wood handled presentation gavel. Gold collar finely engraved: "HON. CHARLES J. HOWARD / PRESIDENT PRO-TEMPORE GENERAL ASSEMBLY / 1915-1916 SENATORS". With original presentation box lined in purple velvet with gilt-printed ribbon reading: "HON. CHARLES J. HOWARD / BARNESVILLE, OHIO." Gavel approx. 9 1/2 in. in length.
A beautiful ceremonial gavel presented to Charles John Howard (1862-1928) in commemoration of his time as President of the Ohio Senate.
Born in Barnesville, Ohio, he attended Ohio State University and graduated from Cincinnati Law School. After establishing a legal practice in his hometown, he embarked on a political career when he was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives in 1896. After two terms, he was elected to the Ohio State Senate. In his first term, he was selected as the floor leader for the minority Republicans. After re-election, with the Republicans now in the majority, he was elected President Pro Tempore.
A fine commemoration of Howard's political contributions to Ohio.
