A group of four (4) newspapers reporting on the assassination of President William McKinley, including illustrated examples. Items include: 

 

1. The North American. Philadelphia: The North American Company, 11 September 1901. 16 pages, folio, 17 x 22 3/4 in.

 

Features a frontpage illustration of Columbia weeping before a door with a mourning bow, surrounded by headlines regarding the assassination. 

 

2. The Philadelphia Inquirer. Philadelphia, 11 September 1901. 4 pages only (incomplete issue), folio, 18 1/2 x 23 1/2 in.

 

With an article titled "Tightening Net About Suspects" with further reporting on anarchists and a portrait of Emma Goldman. She was implicated when Leon Czolgosz claimed to be inspired to assassinate McKinley after hearing a speech by Goldman. Despite Czolgosz denying her involvement, she was held for 2 weeks and subjected to intense police interrogation. 

 

3. The New York Times. Vol. 11, No. 16,130. New York, 18 September 1901. 14 pages, folio, 18 x 23 3/4 in. 

 

With front-page coverage of McKinley's funeral and the start of Theodore Roosevelt's presidential term. 

 

4. Weekly State Gazette. Trenton, New Jersey, 19 September 1901. 8 pages, folio, 18 7/8 x 23 1/2 in. 

 

A portrait of McKinley dominates the front page with reporting on his assassination and funeral. The rest of the article includes a biography of McKinley's career, followed by coverage of his last days and funeral, including a plan showing how Milburn's House was given over to the President in his dying hours, and portraits of the physicians who attended him.
