Wonderfully composed sixth-plate daguerreotype capturing a young gentleman posed on an ornate patterned parlor settee alongside his large pet dog. The sitter wears a dark frock coat, light vest, and high stock collar, resting his right hand affectionately over the coat of a large, dark retriever or setter-type dog lying comfortably beside him across the couch cushions. Posing a large dog on studio furniture required remarkable patience and restraint from both animal and handler during the mandatory multi-second exposure, making full-length interior domestic portraits featuring larger breeds particularly scarce. Seated parlor scenes with companion animals are among the most desirable categories within 19th-century image collecting.

Housed in a decorative thermoplastic wall frame featuring a molded foliate and rope border, set beneath an oval brass mat and unusual but tasteful painted glass surround. 

The plate displays fine clarity and rich contrast, exhibiting expected light peripheral tarnish along the mat edge and minor age wear to the frame housing, including a repaired crack.
