Man and Woman with Dogs, pair of sixth-plate daguerreotypes, France, c. 1850s.

Charmingly paired companion set of two sixth-plate daguerreotypes, likely French in origin, each capturing a seated sitter gently cradling a small pet dog in their lap. The first image depicts a woman in a traditional lace bonnet and dark day dress with her hand resting tenderly over a small white-and-dark spotted dog resting across her lap. The second portrait features a distinguished gentleman in a dark frock coat, high cravat, and light-colored trousers holding a small, long-haired spaniel-type dog. Early 19th-century studio portraits incorporating live animals are notoriously difficult to execute given the long exposure times required for daguerreotypes, making clear domestic pet portraits highly desirable.

Each plate is presented in a classic European-style passe-partout mount featuring a gilded inner arch and black-painted reverse-glass border.

The plates display strong subject clarity and rich tonal contrast, exhibiting minor peripheral tarnish, solarization, and light dust beneath the glass consistent with age.
