Rare Gold Rush-era sixth-plate daguerreotype capturing an intimate portrait of a young mother and child, taken in the Sacramento studio of pioneer California photographer George H. Johnson. Features a tenderly composed studio portrait of a woman in a patterned floral dress, lace mitts, and drop earrings, embracing her young child seated beside her. The pad opposite the image is stamped in embossed red velvet scrollwork: "GEO. H. JOHNSON / 83 J ST / SACRAMENTO". Johnson operated out of his 83 J Street gallery in Sacramento following the devastating fires of the early 1850s, placing him among the premier early daguerreotypists documenting pioneer life during the peak of the California Gold Rush. Early stamped California studio cases and identified West Coast daguerreotypes remain exceptionally desirable items for 19th-century photography specialists and Gold Rush/American West historians. 

Housed in a full leather push-button case with a gilded preserver and brass mat.

The plate exhibits fine clarity and contrast throughout the subject figures, showing light peripheral tarnish along the mat edge consistent with age, while the velvet pad retains strong, legible maker embossing.
