Operating directly out of the Kiowa, Comanche, and Apache Reservation at Fort Sill in the late 1880s and 1890s, George W. Bretz created an exceptional photographic record of Southern Plains tribal members during the early reservation era. Among his most notable photographs are those of Apache prisoners of war being held at Fort Sill, including Geronimo, in 1894. Bretz’s studio work is renowned for its intimacy and the clarity with which it captures fine material culture, while his outdoor landscape views provide invaluable documentation of reservation camp life. Cabinet cards bearing Bretz’s Fort Sill imprint are scarce and highly sought after by collectors of Native American material.
