Head Chiefs of the Poncas. Series: "Photographic Gems Among the Wild Indians of Dakota." Studio portrait. Albumen print stereoview. Yankton, Dakota Territory: Stanley J. Morrow, circa 1870s. Series title and Morrow's imprint to mount recto alongside period pencil title/identification.

A rare and visually striking studio delegation portrait capturing three prominent Ponca leaders. The two seated chiefs are outfitted in double-breasted U.S. Army officers' frock coats with brass buttons, Hardee-style felt hats pinned with infantry insignia, large silver Presidential Peace Medals worn around their necks, and pipe tomahawks held across their laps.

The chief standing behind them is tentatively identified as Chief White Eagle (Xi-Tha-Ska, 1840-1914) of the Pona. He wears a vest over a light shirt, an eagle feather in his hair, a neck choker, and cradles a long beaded and fringed pipe bag with a calumet pipe stem. A circular feather/beaded medallion fan rests between the seated figures.

Stanley J. Morrow (1843–1921) established his gallery in Yankton, Dakota Territory, in 1868, strategically situated near the Ponca and Yankton Sioux agencies. His Photographic Gems Among the Wild Indians of Dakota series offers some of the most vital, immediate visual documentation of Plains tribal leaders during the 1870s treaty, delegation, and reservation eras.

[Native Americans, Ponca, Ponca Nation, Plains Indians, Dakota Territory, Yankton Dakota, Peace Medals, Presidential Peace Medals, Pipe Tomahawks, Calumet, Delegations, US Army Frock Coats, Hardee Hats, American West, Frontier History] [Photography, Early Photography, Historic Photography, Stereoviews, Stereographs, Albumen Prints, Stanley J. Morrow, S. J. Morrow, Frontier Photographers]

Very good condition overall, displaying warm tones, sharp clarity, and strong contrast throughout the prits. The mount is sturdy and flat, showing only light handling wear, consistent with age.
