Grouping of four (4) albumen cabinet cards of presumably Lakota and Dakota subjects. Lot includes:

1. Full-length studio of a Northern Plains Woman in an elk-tooth dress. Albumen cabinet card. [Dakota Territory]: O.S. Goff, [1870s]. Photographer's imprint gilt-printed to mount recto.

Portrait of a young woman, probably Crow or other Northern Plains tribe, standing beside a rustic studio prop, wearing a traditional trade dress densely embellished with rows of elk teeth, a bold vertically striped trade cloth skirt with fringe, and high moccasins.

2. Bust-length studio portrait of Old Crow (Perits-har-sts; Peelatchixaaliash), a principal chief of the Mountain Crow. Albumen cabinet card. [Dakota Territory]: O.S. Goff, [1870s]. Photographer's imprint gilt printed to mount recto.

Powerful bust-length studio profile of Old Crow (Perits-har-sts; Peelatchixaaliash), a distinguished elder and principal chief of the Mountain Crow who was a member of the 1873 Crow Delegation to Washington, D.C. He is captured here wearing a patterned calico shirt, neckerchief, and heavy striped trade blanket draped over his shoulder.

3. Outdoor view of Chippewa/Cree encamped near Havre, Montana. Albumen cabinet card. [Dakota Territory]: O.S. Goff, [1870s]. Photographer's imprint gilted printed to mount recto.

Open landscape view depicting several canvas and hide tipis pitched across a rolling prairie, with family members, horses, a dog, and a covered wagon visible in the camp perimeter. Identified as members of the Chippewa/Cree near Havre, Montana (c.f. Montana State University, Indian Peoples of the Northern Great Plains collection, AL-893-726)

4. Outdoor portrait of a woman and child in front of a tipi. Albumen cabinet card. [Dakota Territory]: O.S. Goff, [1870s]. Photographer's imprint printed to mount recto.

A field portrait of a woman, probably Crow or other Northern Plains tribe, wearing an elk tooth-beaded dress, with a seated child posed outside the entrance of a canvas tipi nestled against timber and brush.

Orlando Scott Goff (1843–1916) established his pioneer photographic galleries at Yankton and later Fort Abraham Lincoln and Bismarck, Dakota Territory, in the 1870s. Working in close proximity to the military garrisons and agency reservations during the height of the Great Sioux War era, Goff produced some of the most iconic and historically vital imagery of the Northern Plains, famously capturing the earliest authenticated portrait of Sitting Bull in 1881. Outdoor field views and studio portraits bearing Goff's gilt imprint remain exceptionally desirable artifacts of Dakota territorial history.

[Native Americans, Lakota, Dakota, Sioux, Plains Indians, Dakota Territory, Fort Abraham Lincoln, Bismarck Dakota Territory, Elk Tooth Dress, Tipis, Encampments, Trade Blankets, Moccasins, American West, Frontier History] [Photography, Early Photography, Historic Photography, Cabinet Cards, Albumen Photographs, Orlando S. Goff, O. S. Goff, Frontier Photographers]
