IMPORTANT 1828 DEFENSE OF NATIVE AMERICAN RIGHTS — ISSUED ON THE EVE OF THE INDIAN REMOVAL ACT

A Brief View of the Present Relations Between the Government and People of the United States and the Indians Within Our National Limits. N.p.: N.p., [circa 1828]. 8vo, 8 pp. FIRST EDTION.

RARE. OCLC locates only 15 copies. Only two copies have ever sold at auction, both from the Eberstadt collection (1954 & 1965)

Provenance: New Jersey Historical Society (Collection stamp to upper margin, with withdrawal stamp).

A very rare drop-title offprint of an unusually forward defense of Native American rights. The tractate is a calculated criticism of the Federal Government's repeated treaty cessions, the removal of all tribes to far-flung western territories. The author argues that the Federal Government repeatedly treatied with the Indians in bad faith, stealing land and obliterating communities.

An unusually clear, closely argued articulation of the responsibility of the American Government to the aboriginal peoples of America.
It fell on deaf ears. The Indian Removal Act passed the following year, laying the groundwork for the Trail of Tears and continued forced relocation.
