Attr. William S. Soule (1836-1908), photographer. Commanche Camp. Outdoor view of a Comanche tipi encampment. Albumen stereoview. [Near Fort Sill, Indian Territory: attributed to William S. Soule], ca. 1869-1874. Identified by ink inscription to mount recto and verso.

A Southern Plains field landscape capturing a traditional Comanche encampment near Fort Sill, Indian Territory (Oklahoma). Several conical hide and canvas tepees stand pitched across the prairie, with drying scaffolds and arboreal shades constructed of timber and brush erected between the lodges. In the foreground beside the central tepee rests a two-wheeled baby carriage, an intriguing piece of Anglo-American trade material culture integrated into camp life during the early reservation transition period. Figures and horses appear gathered near the shades in the midground beneath expansive skies.

Following the Medicine Lodge Treaty of 1867 and the Red River War of 1874-1875, Southern Plains tribes — including the Comanche, Kiowa, and Plains Apache — were increasingly concentrated in the vicinity of Fort Sill and the Wichita Mountains. Contemporary field views of intact traditional camps from this volatile era are exceedingly scarce, offering essential documentary evidence of Plains domestic organization, nomadic camp layout, and early reservation material adaptation.

William Stinson Soule (1836-1908) served as the post photographer at Fort Sill from 1869 to 1874, during the height of the military campaigns on the Southern Plains. Working in close proximity to tribal leadership and army commands, Soule produced the definitive visual record of the Kiowa, Comanche, Cheyenne, and Arapaho, capturing studio portraits, council gatherings, and rare outdoor encampments prior to his departure from the frontier in 1875.

[Native Americans, Comanche, Southern Plains, Indian Territory, Fort Sill, Oklahoma, Tipis, Encampments, Red River War, Material Culture, Plains Indians, Frontier Life, American West] [Photography, Early Photography, Historic Photography, Stereoviews, Stereographs, Albumen Prints, William S. Soule, W. S. Soule, Frontier Photographers]

Good condition overall, with pleasing warm tones. The albumen prints exhibit mild, even age fading in the upper skies and scattered light foxing spots across both images. The buff card mount remains solid, flat, and intact, showing only faint handling wear. Mount verso is clean and unprinted.
