[NATIVE AMERICAN] Santee Sioux Man’s Vest with Floral Beadwork

A Santee Sioux Man’s Floral-Beaded Vest. Eastern Dakota tradition. Hide, red cloth, glass beads, and patterned fabric lining.

A finely decorated man’s vest with pale hide fronts, a plain red cloth back, and matching red borders around the neckline, arm openings, and lower edges. The front panels carry closely related vertical arrangements of stylized flowers and leaves, worked in blue, green, red, yellow, and white glass beads. Small blossoms near the shoulders give way to larger, more elaborate forms below, with curling stems and divided leaves extending toward the sides.

The floral ornament combines recognizable botanical features with strongly abstracted contours. Pointed petals, scalloped flower heads, and symmetrical leaf forms are organized around slender central axes. White and dark blue outlines distinguish the individual elements from the hide ground, while the red cloth provides a broad frame for the composition. Patterned lining is visible along the lower interior.

The Santee, or Eastern Dakota, occupied a cultural position linking the western Great Lakes and the Plains, a relationship reflected in their decorative arts. Discussing a nineteenth-century Dakota vest in its collection, Dartmouth’s Hood Museum identifies repeating floral ornament as evidence of Great Lakes and Woodlands connections within an object that also incorporates Plains design conventions. This regional exchange provides a useful context for the flowing botanical imagery seen here.

The vest form itself was adopted from Euro-American clothing and transformed through Indigenous materials and ornament. On the example offered here, the maker’s attention is concentrated on the paired fronts, where the flowers establish a sustained progression from shoulder to hem. The result is a garment whose distinction rests in the drawing of its motifs and the balance between beadwork, exposed hide, and red cloth.
