[NATIVE AMERICAN] Plains Stone-Headed War Club with Hide-Wrapped Haft
A Plains Stone-Headed War Club. Stone, wood, and hide.
A Plains war club distinguished by its substantial, gray-brown stone head and long, slender haft. The head presents an elongated, rounded profile, its mottled surface contrasting with the warm amber tones of the hide binding. A narrow band encircles its middle and joins the head to the handle, with additional wrapping reinforcing the junction. Hide covers the length of the shaft.
The construction belongs to a documented Plains tradition in which a stone striking head was secured with hide to a slender handle. Museum examples preserve related combinations of stone, wood, and rawhide, illustrating the practical integration of materials with markedly different physical properties. The concentrated weight of the head and the extended reach of the haft establish the essential character of the form.
Here, the largely unembellished surfaces draw attention to the object’s proportions and construction. The broad stone head, narrow encircling band, and gently irregular shaft give the club a pronounced sculptural presence.
