[NATIVE AMERICAN] Northern Plains Riding Quirt with Beaded Hide Drop and Tack Decoration
A Northern Plains Riding Quirt. Wood, hide, glass beads, metal tacks, and pigment.
A Northern Plains riding quirt with a slender wooden handle, a long, twisted hide lash, and a rectangular beaded drop. Rows of domed metal tacks ornament the upper end, where traces of red and green coloration survive beneath the lash attachment and accompanying hide thongs. Much of the shaft remains undecorated, exposing the warm brown wood between the tacked upper section and the ornament below.
The drop is worked predominantly in white glass beads, with dark reddish-brown geometric devices and small passages of yellow and red. Its two faces carry related but distinct arrangements of angular bars. Long, narrow hide fringe falls over the upper portion of the beadwork, partly concealing the design and adding a loose, mobile element to the otherwise compact construction.
The quirt was an important article of Plains riding equipment, used by many Native horsemen in place of spurs. Its decoration belonged to the larger artistic tradition surrounding the horse: bridles, saddles, blankets, and riding implements received the same careful attention given to clothing and personal adornment. Horses transformed hunting, travel, and warfare, while their ownership and exchange became closely associated with family standing, generosity, and individual achievement.
The example offered here brings those practical and decorative concerns together in an object intended to be held and used. The extended lash establishes its purpose; the painted and tacked handle, fringed hide, and contrasting beadwork give the rider’s equipment an individual character.
