[NATIVE AMERICAN] Northern Plains Catlinite Horse Effigy Pipe w/ Openwork Stem
A Northern Plains Catlinite Horse Effigy Pipe with Carved Wooden Stem.
A striking pipe distinguished by its sculptural horse effigy bowl and elongated, openwork wooden stem. Carved from reddish catlinite, the horse’s head emerges from a strongly curved neck, with pointed ears, recessed eyes, and a carefully articulated muzzle. A scalloped mane follows the outer contour, its repeated projections emphasizing the sweep of the neck. The flattened wooden stem incorporates elongated cutout designs separated by angular bridges, introducing a measured interplay of solid surfaces and open spaces. Reddish coloring along its edges complements the warmer tones of the stone.
The choice of equine imagery places the pipe within a significant tradition of Plains artistic expression. Horses transformed hunting, transportation, and warfare, while their ownership became an important measure of personal and family standing. Their representation on clothing, equipment, and other possessions reflected the esteem in which they were held.
Here, the maker has concentrated the animal’s presence in the expressive profile of its head and neck. The rounded modeling of the catlinite contrasts effectively with the extended geometry of the stem, creating a composition that rewards consideration both as a complete object and as a work of small-scale sculpture.
