[NATIVE AMERICAN] Cheyenne Stone-Head War Club w/ Quilled Binding & Beaded Buffalo Hide Drop
A Cheyenne Stone-Head War Club with Beadwork, Quillwork, and Buffalo Hide Pendant. Plains. 29 inches long.
An elegantly proportioned war club with a smooth, dark stone head tapering to opposing points, secured transversely to a long, hide-covered haft. A broad hide binding encloses the center of the stone, overlaid by a narrow band of reddish-orange quillwork incorporating small white and dark geometric details. Immediately below, closely spaced rows of red and white beads, separated by dark lines, form a compact collar around the upper shaft.
The hide covering follows the length of the haft, its prominent longitudinal seam revealing the sinew-sewn construction. At the lower end, a buffalo hide drop retains hair along its edges and reverse. Its beaded face is divided into three rectangular sections: the outer panels carry central red stripes on white grounds, while the middle reverses the arrangement. Narrow dark crossbands separate the fields. Small bead loops, hawk bells, and pendant hide thongs terminating in deer dewclaws complete the ornament.
Stone-headed clubs were used across a broad expanse of the Plains, and the combination of a shaped stone head with a hide-bound wooden haft is well documented.
The example offered here brings several distinct techniques into a carefully coordinated whole. Quillwork emphasizes the head attachment, the beaded collar marks the transition to the shaft, and the long pendant repeats the red-and-white palette at the opposite end. Bells and dewclaws introduce sound and movement to an object whose principal structure is spare and linear.
