[NATIVE AMERICAN] c. 1950 Cloth-Covered Cradleboard

A cradleboard with an elongated, tapering body covered in muted red cloth, its front opening secured by a succession of hide lacings. Narrow black woven bands, patterned with alternating red and cream geometric devices, follow the opening and lower perimeter, with corresponding horizontal bands across the upper covering. A pale lining printed with small flowers and pink ornamental stripes is visible within. A bentwood hoop is lashed at either side, while a pierced wooden extension projects above the rounded head of the covered board.

The decoration follows the cradle’s construction with considerable economy. Vertical bands emphasize its length, transverse passages distinguish the upper section, and the central lacing provides a contrasting irregular rhythm. The floral lining introduces a more intimate decorative element, partially concealed beneath the stronger red exterior. On the reverse, the cloth remains largely unembellished, revealing the stitching and attachments by which the covering is secured.

Cradleboards belong to diverse Indigenous traditions of infant care, combining a supportive structure with a fitted wrapping that allowed a child to remain close to family activity. Their construction and ornament varied substantially among communities. In many traditions, relatives made the cradle to welcome a new child, investing a practical object with familial significance through its preparation and decoration.
