[NATIVE AMERICAN] c. 1890 Sioux Beaded Hide Knife Sheath with Metal Cones
A Sioux Beaded Hide Knife Sheath. Northern Plains, circa 1890. Accompanied by a later German Okapi knife.
A richly ornamented Sioux knife sheath with a gently tapering hide body densely worked in glass beads against a brick-red ground. Yellow stepped devices outlined in dark blue and accented with light blue articulate the rectangular upper section, where a central column of alternating colored blocks establishes a strong longitudinal axis. Below, green geometric elements enclosing yellow and blue details occupy the center of the blade compartment, framed by smaller devices along the edges and curved tip.
A transverse row of suspended metal cones marks the division between the two decorative fields, adding depth and movement to the closely beaded surface. A beaded loop extends from the opening, repeating the principal colors of the body. The reverse is largely undecorated hide, its exposed surface contrasting with the saturated color and fine texture of the ornamented face.
The sheath belongs to a Northern Plains tradition in which useful personal equipment also provided a setting for accomplished decorative work. By the nineteenth century, imported glass beads had become an established medium of Plains artistry. Native makers adapted their expanding range of colors to distinctive geometric compositions, expressing community traditions through individual choices of scale, arrangement, and contrast.
The accompanying knife has a broad metal blade and a longitudinally grooved reddish-brown handle secured with metal fasteners. Its blade bears an animal trademark above “OKAPI,” together with “MADE IN GERMANY.” It possibly dates later than the sheath construction, and their original association is not certain.
A striking example of Sioux beadwork.
