Made of soft, tawny hide, this finely ornamented man’s jacket is distinguished by its vivid bands of blue, red, and yellow glass beadwork. Geometric designs articulate the shoulders and upper sleeves, while narrower beaded borders trace the neckline, open front, and lower edge. Long fringe falls from the sleeves and hem; dark hair locks are attached along the shoulders and sides, adding movement and emphasis to the garment’s silhouette.
The jacket belongs to a Northern Plains tradition in which hide garments were both practical clothing and meaningful expressions of identity and standing. Glass beads, introduced through trade, were adapted by Indigenous makers into distinctive patterns and carefully worked decorative bands. Among the Oglala Lakota, hair-fringed shirts could be associated with recognized leadership and the trust of a community. The presence of hair fringe here is perhaps associated with that tradition.
A striking example of early Sioux dress, the jacket brings together the supple surface of hide, saturated beadwork, and tactile fringe in a composition that is at once restrained and richly expressive.
