[NATIVE AMERICAN] 1870s Yankton Sioux Beaded and Quilled Pipe Bag
A Yankton Sioux (Ihanktonwan Dakota) Beaded and Porcupine-Quilled Hide Pipe Bag. Northern Plains, circa 1870s.
An elegantly proportioned pipe bag of pale hide, distinguished by contrasting geometric devices worked against blue-beaded grounds. On one face, a yellow square outlined in dark blue encloses a small green rectangular center. The opposite face carries a stepped yellow figure bordered in dark blue, its projecting arms giving the design a compact, almost cruciform silhouette. Narrow bands of blue, green, and yellow beads articulate the opening and side seam, while traces of green pigment remain across the largely undecorated upper body.
Below the beadwork, parallel hide strips wrapped in red and cream porcupine quills form a substantial pendant panel. The placement of the cream quills creates elongated rectangular figures within the red ground, extending the geometric character of the beaded ornament. Long, twisted fringe completes the lower edge. The successive changes from supple hide to closely worked beads, lustrous quills, and trailing fringe give the bag a particularly rich variety of surface and texture.
Pipe bags protected and transported objects that held an important place in Plains social and spiritual life. Pipes accompanied prayer, trade, negotiations, and other communal occasions; the attention devoted to their containers reflected the significance of their contents.
Its distinction lies particularly in the restraint of the two principal beaded designs and their relationship to the more elaborate quilled panel below. Each face offers a different composition within the same carefully controlled palette, making the bag rewarding to examine from either side.
