An excellent example of early twentieth-century Plains Native American ledger art, executed in colored pencil and graphite on lined accounting paper.

Noted bottom left as "Armando Black Horse 1907."

The scene depicts a intense battle outcome featuring seven human figures and one horse, all struck by arrows with vibrant red pigment illustrating blood spray and wound locations. A traditional Plains pictographic layout, scattering the figures vertically across the page to prioritize headcount, detail, and narrative flow over realistic spatial depth. The clothing and adornments are meticulously detailed, showing distinct patterns on leggings, tunics, and shirt fronts, along with single or double feathers in hair braids, which historically served as visual signatures to indicate specific individuals, warrior societies, or tribal affiliations.

By 1907, ledger art had largely transitioned into the reservation era, during which artists created these compositions both to preserve historical memories for future generations and to generate income through sales to visiting collectors, traders, and tourists. The surname Black Horse is historically prominent among Northern Cheyenne and Lakota communities, most notably associated with the Cheyenne leader active during the late nineteenth-century Plains Wars.
