A collection of five (5) photogravures depicting important Native Americans involved in the Battle of the Little Bighorn - Custer’s Last Stand. Each photogravure is after a photograph by Joseph K. Dixon taken during the “Expedition of Citizenship” funded by Rodman Wanamaker. The images were published in The Vanishing Race, published by Wanamaker. Each with Wanamaker's 1913 copyright and printed title. Views include:
1. Goes Ahead - Custer Scout. Outdoor portrait.
Goes Ahead (ca. 1851-1919) was a Crow scout for General George Armstrong Custer’s 7th Cavalry during the 1876 campaign against the Sioux and Northern Cheyenne tribes, culminating in the Battle of the Little Bighorn. He survived the battle, and his accounts of the battle are highly regarded.
2. White Man Runs Him Custer Scout. Half-length portrait.
White Man Runs Him (ca. 1858-1929) was also a scout for Custer's 7th Cavalry and survivor of the Battle of the Little Bighorn.
3. Here Custer Fell. Outdoor photograph of four Crow scouts at the spot where “Custer fell.”
A portrait of (left to right) White Man Runs Him, Hairy Moccasin, Curley, and Goes Ahead, taken in southern Montana at the battlefield of the Little Bighorn,
4. Curly - Custer Scout. Studio half-length portrait.
Curly (Ahishishe, ca. 1856-1923) was a Crow scout who is best known as the last member of Custer's battalion to depart the detachment before its annihilation at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Though he did not participate, he may have observed from a distance. He was the first to report on the defeat of the 7th Cavalry.
5. Map of the Custer Battlefield. Photogravure after a map of Gen. Custer’s battlefield from the Battle of the Little Bighorn.
Rodman Wanamaker (1863-1928) was the heir to the Wanamaker’s department store, as well as a businessman, patron of the arts, early aviation supporter, and Native American scholar. Between 1908 and 1913, he sponsored three photographic expeditions to capture the vanishing ways of life Native Americans were experiencing. Joseph Kossuth Dixon was employed as the photographer on these expeditions and took over 8,000 negatives of Native Americans.
A fine collection of images related to Custer’s Last Stand.
