Contemporary or near-contemporary wooden frame.

A nice portrait of a military officer identified as Colonel E.M.W. in a red-and-white coat, black cravat and black sash featuring a decorative buckle. Because of his red coat, it's possible this man was a British officer, but without more details, it's hard to determine conclusively.
