Two (2) outdoor albumen cartes de visite (CDVs) of Salt Lake City with significance to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Views include:
1. Brigham Estate. Salt Lake City, Utah Territory: E. Martin, late 1860. Martin's imprint to verso with perioid ink inscribed title.
An outdoor view showing Brigham Young's large estate known as the Beehive House, a Greek Revival building designed by Truman O. Angell in 1854. The magnificent structure served as Young's official residence, office, and the executive mansion of the Utah Territory. In 1859, the large ornamental gateway known as the Eagle Gate (seen at right), was added to the Young family compound.
Edward Martin (d. 1882) emigrated to Salt Lake City with the first Mormon wagon train from Nauvoo, Illinois, in 1846, and fought in the Mormon Battalion during the Mexican War. He is best remembered for his portraits of prominent Church members.
2. Outdoor view of Lion House and Beehive House, Brigham Young's estate. Salt Lake City, Utah: Savage & Ottinger, late 1860s. Savage & Ottinger imprint to verso alongside cancelled orange 2-cent stamp.
Elevated perspective overlooking the Brigham Young residential complex, including the multi-dormered Lion House, surrounding orchards, and the foothills of the Wasatch Range. The Lion House was built 2 years after Beehive House to the east, serving as the multi-family residence to accomodate Young's large plural family.
Charles Roscoe Savage (1832–1909) and George Martin Ottinger (1833–1917) formed their premier Salt Lake City photographic and art partnership in 1862. Working out of their Great Salt Lake City gallery, Savage & Ottinger became the foremost visual chroniclers of the Mormon pioneer experience, Temple Square construction, and the transcontinental railway. This card features their earliest G.S.L. City oval mark.
