Deseret Store. Outdoor view. Albumen carte de visite (CDV) on red-ruled publisher's mount. Salt Lake City: Savage & Ottinger, ca. late 1860s. Photographer's imprint and pencil inscription to mount verso.
A prime Utah territorial street scene capturing a large mule pack train and expedition party assembled in front of the Deseret Store and General Tithing Office complex in Salt Lake City. The prominent three-story building displays bold painted signage reading "DESERET STORE" along its upper facade and features a multi-level covered timber veranda with onlookers, flanked by a cobblestone-and-mortar tithing yard wall with the Wasatch Range rising in the background. In the expansive dirt thoroughfare, dozens of packers, teamsters, dogs, and mounted figures pose alongside heavily burdened pack mules outfitted with wooden sawbuck pack saddles, canvas bags, and camp provisions.
Established at the corner of South Temple and Main Street under the direction of Brigham Young and the Presiding Bishopric, the General Tithing Office and Deseret Store formed the economic nerve center of early Mormon pioneer society. In a cash-scarce frontier economy, tithes and goods were brought here for valuation, storage, and community distribution. The plaza in front of the store served as the primary staging area and supply depot for territorial freight outfits, surveying expeditions, and overland parties preparing to cross the Great Basin.

Very good condition overall, with strong tones, sharp focus, and excellent detail throughout. The card mount is solid and clean, showing only faint corner rounding and light, even age toning.
