M1830 United States Naval Officer’s Sword. Cheapside, London: Joseph A. Storrs, ca. early 1830s.
Complete with its leather scabbard. The 29 3/4 in. spear-point, slightly curved blade with 9 1/2 in. false edge measures 36 1/4 in. overall. Features include a patterned feathered ivory grip and eagle-head pommel, symmetrical acorn quillons, and an oval folding counter-guard engraved with crossed oak leaves and acorns. The blade preserves partial browning and traces of gold gilding over its etched decoration: the obverse bearing “Jos A Storrs / Cheapside / London” on a curling ribband, the reverse inscribed “Warranted,” with both sides decorated with a fouled anchor, a ring of thirteen stars, and acorned oak foliage.
The Model 1830 was the first United States naval officer’s sword standardized by official pattern drawing. That design would remain in effect until superseded by new regulations in 1842, though later examples reveal subtle evolutions, including narrower blades and the addition of a fuller. This example, with its broad, unfullered blade, represents an early form of the pattern. Condition is notable: the blade retains sharp gilt engravings with only light pitting; the scabbard mounts display dark patination; and the hilt survives in very fine state. The sword's ivory grip, so often prone to cracking, is entirely undamaged.
