M1814 light cavalry sabre. [Birmingham, England]: John Gill. Blade spine stamped "[I.] GILL." Blade 32 3/8 in. Overall 39 in.
A cavalry sabre intended for use by all regular light cavalry regiments, Hussars, Chasseurs, Lanciers, and Mounted Artillery. The blade is smooth with a toned-down metal patina. The brass has aged nicely. The leather is gone exposing the wood grip; the loose original wire is present. The scabbard is in good condition with very light surface pitting noted. Stamped "I. GILL", a mark believed to be that of John Gill, the son of famous Birmingham bladesmith Thomas Gill.
