Composite saber. N.p., ca. late 18th-early 19th c. Spine stamped "M". Blade 33 5/8 in., overall 39 in. long.

The stamped "M" indicates that the sword was contracted for the state of Maryland. It is unclear whence the guard, with an unusually squared and ornamented knucklebow and acorn finial quillon, was sourced; the backstrap appears to have been taken from an Austro-Hungarian m1765 Grenadier hanger sword per the distinctive pommel.

The blade is overall extensively worn, with very deep patination to the blade, brass guard, ferrule and backstrap; the remainder of the grip is worn leather over cord-wrapped wood, with 12 wraps of double-strand brass wire. Traces of the original brass finish are visible to the guard.
