M1832 artillery short sword. Springfield, Massachusetts: N.P. Ames, 1835. Ricasso stamped: "N. [P. A]mes / [Springfie]ld" below a flying eagle. Ricasso reverse marked "Unit[ed] / Sta[tes] / 1835".

Complete in leather scabbard. Inspired by the French m1816, which in turn drew inspiration from the Roman gladius, the m1832 saw use by artillerymen through the Mexican War and by both sides during the Civil War. This attractive example is an early production, reinforced by its having been manufactured at Springfield and the period-appropriate inspectors' marks of Major Henry Knox Craig (1791-1869) and Justin Murphy alongside an Ordnance Department acceptance "ORD" stamp.
