Model 1858 French-pattern Infantry leather shako. Stamped brass eagle Infantry front plate with metal cockade painted in red and blue. Original wide leather sweatband. With side vents.

At the start of the Civil War, the Federal Government purchased 10,000 sets of uniforms imported from the Godillot firm in Paris. These were distributed to the 62nd & 83rd Pennsylvania, 49th & 72nd New York, and 18th Massachusetts Infantries. The shakos, however, were disliked by Union soldiers as they were deemed unnecessarily hot (despite ventilation holes) and heavy. At the end of the war, the surplus was sold to Francis Bannerman.

A nice example.
