.54 caliber. 6" barrel secured by a single flat, pin retained band. NSN. Browned barrel, color casehardened lock and hammer, brass furniture, walnut stock. Single shot muzzleloading smoothbore percussion pistol made with no sights and with a captive swivel ramrod. Percussion inside lock marked "N.P. AMES / SPRINGFIELD / MASS" in three horizontal lines forward of the hammer and marked "U.S.N. / 1843" in two vertical lines at the tail. Breech marked "USN / 1843 / RC / P " in four lines. Counterpane with traces of two script cartouches that are not really legible.

Only 2,000 of these pistols were made for the US Navy by Ames circa 1842-1845. An attractive example of a fairly scarce mid-19th century US naval pistol. {ANTIQUE}

About Fine. Bore heavily oxidized and dark with some pitting. Metal with much of the thinning brown intact with some added touch up brown here and there. Lock with some faded and dulled case colors present, possibly enhanced. Markings remain clear in metal, weak in wood. Mechanically functional lock. Wood lightly sanded and refinished with weak marks and scattered minor bumps, dings and mars.
