Florence Nightingale (1820-1910), affectionately nicknamed “the Lady with the Lamp,” is best known for her contributions to safe-nursing practices. After implementing her methods during the Crimean War (1854), and reducing the death rate of soldiers from 40 percent to 2 percent in her hospitals, Nightingale’s nursing strategies would continue to spread and improve the conditions of medical treatment. She was the first recipient of the new Royal Red Cross Medal.
