Full-length seated portrait of Curly (Ahishishe). Albumen cabinet card. [Dakota Territory?], [D.F. Barry], [circa 1880s]. Identification to mount recto lower margin (partially obliterated), modern ink identification to mount verso.

An unpublished view Curly (Ahishishe, ca. 1856-1923), the Crow scout who is best known as the last member of Custer's battalion to depart the detachment before its annihilation at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Though he did not participate, he may have observed from a distance. He was the first to report on the defeat of the 7th Cavalry.

In this impressive full-length view, Curley wears his hair in braids, sports layers of beaded necklaces, and holds what appears to be a weapon, perhaps a wrapped rifle. His attire is identical to that of other views bearing the imprint of D.F. Barry, almost certainly captured in the same sitting. (c.f. P1967.378, Amon Carter Museum of American Art).

POSSIBLY UNIQUE VIEW. We found no other copies at the time of cataloging.
