Genuine wallpaper fragment from Lincoln's death room at Petersen House, Washington D.C. Approx. 1 1/4 x 3/4 in.

WITH Copy of typed letter signed by Gay A. Thompson, Architectural Technician. National Park Service, National Capital Region, Washington, D.C., 1 October 1980. Please note that this is a copy and not a live signature.

Provenance: Charlie Marstellar; Heritage Auctions (2011)

The letter from 1980 states that the "wallpaper sample is authentic and is from the room where Lincoln died." They compared it to samples taken during the 1932 restoration and suggested it had been removed between 1900 and 1932.

Lincoln relics remain highly desirable today, with objects related to the president’s death as collectible now as they were in 1865 when the American public clamored for any keepsake of their martyred president.

[Civil War, Union, Confederate] [Abraham Lincoln, African American History, Black Americana, Slavery, Slave, Abolition, Abolitionist, Emancipation Proclamation, 13th Amendment] [John Brown, Frederick Douglass, Ulysses S. Grant, US Grant]
