Irish-American framed silk embroidery. 14x16 in., matted and framed to 20 x 18 in.
A beautifully crafted embroidery featuring iconography related to both Ireland and the United States of America. Featured on the left side of the piece is the embroidered word "United." Underneath the lettering is the image of the American flag draped over a cannon with cannonballs surrounding it. An eagle with its wings outstretched flies above a star and striped emblem, and Native American teepees can be seen in the background.
On the right side of the piece features the embroidered letters of "Ireland." From that side are the iconic images of Ireland, including a harp, a hound, a building resembling a castle in the background among the hills, and a horn resting upon an stitched tree.
In the center of the piece is a tree, stretching up with the identifications of four provinces within Ireland, "Ulster," "Leinster," "Munster," and "Connaught," stretched clockwise around the leaves of the tree. "Ulster" and "Munster" appear to be chained, while "Connaught" and "Leinster" are written on the image of two arms, stretching through the chains to shake hands.
Both countries would face disputes of Civil War throughout their time, divisively changing their nations. During the American Civil War, the Irish would support both the Union and Confederacy, including the Irish Brigade formed in New York and the 24th Georgia Infantry, which would primarily be composed of Irish soldiers.
