Manuscript document. Signed by St. Alfred Fossette, Capt. William Badger, and 1st Lieut. William Henry Harrison Crowell. Camp at White River, Summit County, Colorado, 8 June 1881. 1 page, legal folio, 7 3/4 x 12 1/2 in.

A remarkable Indian Wars military affidavit related to Private Jacob Green of the 6th U.S. Infantry. While detailed as a guard for military convicts in December 1880, Pvt. Green deserted on the way from White River in Colorado to Fort Rawlins, Wyoming Territory. It is noted that he took his Buffalo Overcoat, Muskrat gauntlets, and muskrat cape when he deserted.

The statement offered here is that of 1st Sergeant Alfred Fossette of Co. A, 6th US Infantry, who attests that Captain William Badger, commander of Company A, was not responsible for the desertion. The document is also signed by Captain Badger and 1st Lieutenant William Henry Harrison Crowell, also of the 6th U.S. Infantry, who was also the Judge Advocate.

A very rare description of the frontier gear worn by the U.S. Army during the Late Indian Wars.

[Late Indian Wars, Great Sioux War, George Armstrong Custer, Battle of Little Bighorn, Lakota, Lakota Sioux, Arapaho, Northern Cheyenne, Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse] [Manuscripts, Documents, Letters, Ephemera, Signatures, Autographs]
