A stunning suite of nonsense rhymes by Paul Hosch with eccentric and charming illustrations by Hans Melching.
Hosch, an architect by profession, studied at the Darmstadt Künsterlerkolonie where he was profoundly influenced by the art of the Wiener Sezession and Wiener Werkstätte. The illustrations are a whimsical and vivid homage to this distinctive Viennese style. The ongoing Great War and obscure Basel dialect of German meant that the work was largely overlooked at the time. Bibliographer Martin Kaiser lauds the work, writing, "In 1915 one of the most wonderful Swiss children's books was published." (Swiss Picture Books, p. 33).
