Quarter plate studio portrait daguerreotype. Galena, Illinois: Alexander Hesler, ca. early 1850s. Housed in a full dark brown leatherette case. Interior lid retains a rich maroon velvet facing pad deeply embossed in ribbon banners: "HESLER / ARTIST / GALENA."

A refined antebellum portrait capturing an elegant young woman posed in a classic Victorian contemplative attitude. Seated three-quarter length turned toward the left, she rests her right elbow upon an upholstered studio table or armchair covered in rich floral brocade, gently supporting her cheek against her fingers. Her hair is styled in a severe, low center-parted roll sweeping smoothly over the ears. She is dressed in an elaborate dark silk taffeta day gown tailored with a pleated bodice, pagoda-style oversleeves edged in fine black lace, and voluminous pleated white undersleeves terminating in ruffled cuffs. A delicate ruffled white lace tucker encircles her high collar.

Alexander Hesler (1823-1895) ranks among the premier masters of American daguerreian art. After learning the process in the late 1840s, Hesler established his first celebrated studio in the booming lead-mining capital of Galena, Illinois. It was at this studio where he quickly earned national acclaim for his technical virtuosity and entered prize-winning daguerreotypes at the 1851 Crystal Palace Exhibition in London. Hesler later relocated to Chicago in 1853, going on to take iconic landscape daguerreotypes of Minnehaha Falls (which inspired Longfellow's Hiawatha) and the definitive 1858 and 1860 portraits of Abraham Lincoln.

Identified Galena-period daguerreotypes bearing Hesler’s prominent studio-embossed velvet pad on the larger quarter-plate format are scarce, highly sought-after artifacts of early frontier and Midwestern photography.
