An original albumen carte-de-visite three-quarter length studio portrait of Major General Winfield Scott Hancock seated in a wooden chair, his right arm casually draped over the backrest. He wears a double-breasted general officer's frock coat with properly spaced groupings of buttons, velvet cuffs, and major general shoulder straps. The image has a standard double-line border design on the front mount, and a bold Anthony backstamp. 

This historic portrait captures one of the most brilliant, celebrated, and influential tactical commanders in the history of the United States Army: Major General Winfield Scott Hancock. A graduate of West Point, Hancock earned a reputation for peerless battlefield leadership while commanding the First Division, Second Corps, during the 1862 Peninsula Campaign, where his tenacity at Williamsburg prompted Major General George B. McClellan to famously wire Washington that "Hancock was superb," a moniker that followed him for the rest of his life.

Hancock went on to cement his place in military lore at the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863. Following the death of Major General John F. Reynolds on the first day of fighting, Major General George G. Meade rushed Hancock forward to take command of all Union forces on the field. Hancock's masterful deployment of troops along Cemetery Ridge secured the federal defensive line. On July 2, his timely reinforcement of the shattered Union left flank blunted the Confederate breakthrough, and on July 3, his Second Corps bore the absolute brunt of Pickett's Charge, successfully shattering the grand Confederate assault. Hancock was severely and permanently wounded in the thigh during the climax of the fighting on Cemetery Ridge while riding the lines to encourage his men.

This fine Anthony imprint captures the general during the height of his wartime fame, exuding the calm, imposing confidence that defined the elite corps leadership of the Army of the Potomac.
