A lot consisting of two (2) original albumen CDVs of the same Union officer, Capt. Joseph F. Land of the 20th Maine. The first image is a full-length studio portrait showing the officer standing in a frock coat with his hand tucked inside his coat lapel, resting next to a table displaying his slouch hat. The second image is a close-up vignette headshot from the shoulders up. The reverse of both full-length portraits bear a clear photographer's backmark for A.C. Lewis, Photographist, No. 12 Market Square, Portland, Me., along with a collector's pencil inscription identifying the subject: "Capt Joseph F. Land / Co H 20th Maine."
Joseph F. Land (1838–1927) served as an officer in the legendary 20th Maine Volunteer Infantry, a regiment immortalized for its defense of Little Round Top at the Battle of Gettysburg. Originally component to the 19th Maine, Land transferred and was commissioned as a lieutenant into Company H of the 20th Maine in 1862, eventually rising to the rank of captain.
During his tenure with the 20th Maine, Land served through the regiment's most grueling campaigns in the Eastern Theater and was present at its pinnacle: the Battle of Gettysburg. He was later wounded in action during the heavy fighting at the Battle of Wilderness in May 1864. Surviving his wounds, he returned to the regiment and was later brevetted major for gallant and meritorious services during the war before being mustered out in June 1865. Following the war, he practiced medicine as a physician.
Any identified material associated with the 20th Maine automatically commands premium interest from Civil War collectors due to the regiment's elite historical status and fame. Finding a matching pair of wartime CDVs tracking the same officer — combining both a detailed uniform study and a sharp, forensic vignette portrait — is an exceptional rarity.
