2. Vignetted bust portrait albumen CDV. New York: Mathew Brady, [ca. 1863]. Recto bears the quintessential Brady New York gallery imprint.

Clinton Dugald MacDougall (1839–1914), commander of the 111th New York Infantry. A relentless combat officer, MacDougall led his regiment into the heart of the fighting at Gettysburg on 2 and 3 July 1863. During the repulse of Pickett’s Charge, MacDougall was severely wounded while directing his men’s fire from the Union center. By the war's end, he had been wounded four times and brevetted brigadier general for his "gallant and meritorious services." His post-war career was equally distinguished, serving as a U.S. Congressman and a long-time political leader in New York.

MacDougall is shown in his officer’s frock coat in the first image, looking off-camera with a determined gaze. In the second, MacDougall is depicted again in his officer's frock coat, but this time wearing a forage cap featuring a distinct infantry horn insignia with the regimental number "111" clearly visible within the loop. These images capture him during the peak of his wartime service, likely around the time of the Gettysburg campaign. As an officer who led one of the hardest-fighting units in the Army of the Potomac — the 111th New York suffered the second-highest losses of any Union regiment at Gettysburg — this portrait serves as a significant visual link to the carnage of the "Bloody Angle."

MacDougall’s story is the epitome of the citizen-soldier’s sacrifice. Born in Scotland and raised in Auburn, New York, he turned from banking to the battlefield, eventually commanding the 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, II Corps. He was a favorite of Gen. Winfield Scott Hancock, and his leadership at Gettysburg was instrumental in holding the Union line against the final Confederate surge. This CDV stands as a poignant tribute to an officer who was nearly killed at the war’s most famous turning point but survived to become a towering figure in New York’s Gilded Age.
