Three-quarter length seated studio portrait albumen CDV. Fortress Monroe, VA: Kimberly Bros., National Gallery, [ca. late 1864]. A striking, crisp study capturing an officer seated in a wooden parlor chair. He is attired in a dark, open officer's fatigue coat with visible lieutenant shoulder straps, unbuttoned to reveal a light-colored vest with a tight row of military buttons, dark trousers, and a neatly trimmed chin beard.  The reverse features a Kimberly Bros. backmark and green three-cent Washington proprietary revenue stamp. The verso bears a flawless period ink presentation signature: "Ever Yours / Enoch F. Jackman / 1st Lt 6th I[nfantry] U.S.C.T."

This exceptional albumen CDV features a magnificent, highly significant portrait of an identified Gettysburg combat casualty from the hard-fighting 2nd New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry - First Lieutenant Enoch F. Jackman. Housed on a desirable, localized Virginia backmark and heavily enhanced by historic content, this portrait stands as a museum-grade study of a legendary Granite State officer.

Enoch F. Jackman boasts an immortal operational record with the 2nd New Hampshire Infantry, a hard-fighting unit that sustained some of the most staggering infantry losses of the entire war. Initially enlisting as a sergeant in Company B in May 1861, Jackman's administrative skill and battlefield bravery earned him steady promotion to Second Lieutenant of Company A in 1862, and First Lieutenant of Company I by the summer of 1863. He was discharged for promotion on 7/27/1863 at Point Lookout, MD, and later was commissioned as a 1st lieutenant into Co. C, USCT 6th infantry. The 6th USCT participated in attacks on Fort Fisher and Wilmington, and the Carolinas Campaign.

At the Battle of Gettysburg on 2 July 1863, the 2nd New Hampshire was thrown into the epicenter of the tactical maelstrom at the Peach Orchard. Tasked with holding a highly exposed salient against the crushing assault of Longstreet's Confederate corps, the regiment engaged in a desperate, close-quarters firefight. Of the 354 officers and men engaged, the regiment suffered an astonishing 193 casualties in a matter of hours - including Jackman, who was severely wounded in action during the chaotic collapse of the Peach Orchard line. Jackman survived his wounds, later transferring to the Veteran Reserve Corps in 1864, where he continued his service at vital coastal installations like Fortress Monroe, where this very portrait was captured by the Kimberly Brothers gallery.

Gettysburg casualty images are among the most desirable and least available genres of Civil War portraiture. Portraits of verified Peach Orchard combat casualties from hallowed New Hampshire regiments like the 2nd represent an extraordinary acquisition opportunity.
