Unveiling of Monument to the First Maine Cavalry at Gettysburg, Oct. 3d, 1889. Boston, Massachusetts: C.A.F. Emery, [1889?].

Small 8vo. Original yellow-tan cloth gilt-lettered. FIRST EDITION.

A rare souvenir book from the dedication of the 1st Maine Cavalry Monument at Gettysburg. In addition to 2 plates of the monument, the book publishes an address by General Charles H. Smith and a poem by First Lieutenant Edward P. Tobie, both of whom served in the 1st Maine Cavalry.

A heavily engaged unit, the 1st Maine Cavalry saw over 40 battles, including Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg. Over the course of its long and active service, the regiment lost over 500 of its men. Material relating to the 1st Maine Cavalry is highly prized.

RARE, never sold at auction, OCLC locates only 11 copies. Not listed in Nevins.
