Group of 42 albumen photographs. [St. Augustine, Florida], circa 1875-1878. Each approx. 3 x 2 ⅞ in. to paper mounts each 5 ⅜ x 7 ½ in. Mounts appear to be disbound, one photo per leaf, one-sided, except where noted.
An extensive group of photographs showing cityscapes, historic architecture, flora, and people - notably including several views of African American and Native American subjects.
A notable image is a large group portrait of 36 Native Americans. They are almost certainly a part of the 74 Plains Indians imprisoned at Fort Marion (now known as Castillo de San Marcos) between 1875 and 1878. They represented 5 different tribes Cheyenne (33), Kiowa (27), Comanche (11), Arapaho (2), and Caddo (1).
Additionally, there are 9 captivating images featuring Black subjects - both posed portraits and candid views.
A fine collection of photographs capturing 1870s St. Augustine.
