Édouard Alexandre Bernard (1879-1950)
BUTTE-PINSON PIERREFITTE-MONTMAGNY / MOULIN DE LA GALETTE
[Paris, France]
S.D.E. Editions
circa 1920s
Approx 33 3/8 x 49 1/2 in.
A French travel poster advertising the restaurant "Moulin de la Galette" in Butte-Pinson. Active from 1914 and especially popular during the interwar period, the large venue had several large reception rooms and gardens and hosted public dances, weddings, and banquets. Located in Butte-Pinson, now a suburb of the capital, the poster touts that it is only 30 minutes from Paris and includes several transportation options.
The design shows a crowded dance pavilion surrounded by a lush garden. In the foreground, a multi-racial jazz band keeps the crowd lively. The artist uses racist minstrel stereotypes to render the Black drummer and saxophonist, though otherwise depicts them alongside their white counterparts.
